Tibetan language will not be a required part of my retreat. However I am currently studying Tibetan as part of my retreat preparation in order to be able to perform my daily practice in Tibetan and comprehend it as well as be able to read some texts in their original language. Lama Drimed has encouraged me to connect with Lama Pema Dorje for instruction in Tsa Lung practice and should that happen spoken Tibetan language will also be important. +
We reciteall our practices in Tibetan but for those who don'tknow it, phonetics and translations are always available. +
The retreat requires the ability to fluently read Tibetan, as the sadhanas are only available in Tibetan. +
[Notes about written comprehension:] Mostly (and limited) dharma vocabulary. With transliteration I can follow the written Tibetan. Without transliteration, only some recognition of letters. My wish is to spend focused time with Tibetan - to cross over and be able to do pujas solely in Tibetan. As I get older, of course, it is more difficult for the brain to assimilate⦠but Iâm still aspiring to do so.
[About parts of retreat functioning in Tibetan:] We read transliteration of Tibetan for pumas, toss and prayers. We also read in English for meaning. Teachings are in Tibetan - translated by Paloma. +

Aspiration prayers, linaje prayers included in the morning and night practices, and translated to spanish as well in the texts. +
Introductions will be given in Tibetan but there will be a translator.

The practice sessions we will be chanting in Tibetan and we have the phonetics and English translation also in the texts. The daily teachings are held via Zoom, they are being broadcast from Nepal in Tibetan accompanied with English translation, so there is no need to have any Tibetan to follow the programme. I will however be learning Tibetan myself as part of my studies. +
Group rituals and individual sadhanas are performed and memorized in Tibetan.
A willingness to learn to read and write in Tibetan is required and I am looking forward to this aspect of study as I have a lifetime passion for linguistics, language learning and study. Of course I would love to be able to access nuances of text perhaps lost in translation, though I doubt that level of sophistication in language learning is possible after such a short period of study. Still, recognizing patterns in the Tibetan adds insight to my understanding, and I welcome this.
Before I "retired," I purchased a set of Tibetan Language Learning materials--tapes, workbooks, texts, dictionaries, etc--and intended to attempt to learn as much as possible on my own or in on-line courses. But this didn't happen. +
