This is a traditional 3 year refieat, so both individual practice and group chanting
are all chanted in Tibetan I am cunently reading and chanting from all Tibetan
texts (no transliteration) as well as beginnhg to tanslate these texts as well for
my own use. Insfuction is given by LamaNorlha Rinpoche in Tibetan translated
by an interpreter. +
Instruction from Lama Norlha Rinpoche will be in Tibetan, with oral English translation. Rinpoche will teach all of the retreat practices. Additional instruction/clarification from teaching assistants who are retreat graduates will be in English. Group rituals and individual practice will use the traditional Tibetan texts, for which English translations are provided +
All practice texts provided will be in Tibetan (many have optional English phonetic translation), with accompanying English translation of the meaning. All group rituals, and daily tsokpas will be chanted in Tibetan. Instruction from Lama Norlha Rinpoche will mostly be in Tibetan, with an English translator present. +
During the retreat all the instructions and communication will be done in English. However, since the sadhanas to be practice in group rituals are written in Tibetan and has no transliterations, we need to know how to read Tibetan. We are not required to understand or speak Tibetan but we are required to read it correctly and really fast. +
Fast reading/chanting required for group rituals and individual practice. Reading comprehension is not required. +
Group rituals, individual practice +
Everything in the retreat will be in Tibetan but with English transliteration. +
We were told quite recently that there would be no English transliteration and that we need to be fluent in reading Tibetan for all practices. Instructions will be in English (through a translator I believe).
Please note that I have learned how to read Tibetan during the 4 week Tibetan Language Intensive course here at KTD in July/Aug 2016, but I did not focus on communication and meaning. I spent this time learning how to read and learning how to read quickly as we were recently told we needed this (previously some were told there would be English transliterations provided) +
The group rituals and individual practices will be done in Tibetan (though all of the retreat texts now have transliteration and the English translation as well). All instruction will be done in English, and the retreat master Lama Lodhro Lamo is able to translate for Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche and any other visiting teachers who may come. I've been told the most important thing is to be able to read, but comprehension is not necessary (though recommended). I can now read, and am building my vocabulary and grammar skills. +
All the practice texts at Karme Ling are printed in Tibetan, so all retreatants are required to read Tibetan. Retreatants are not required to comprehend Tibetan as all instruction and communication is in English. +
All of the chanting, both group and individual, is done in Tibetan.
Retreatants are given the option to have English or Chinese phonetics
included in their text, or no phonetics at all. I do not use any phonetics.
All instruction is given in English, and Chinese if necessary. +

"All the retreat practices are done in Tibetan and there are no transliterated texts available to retreatants. Retreatants need to be able to read Tibetan quickly before they come to the pre-retreat training. Although comprehension is not required, the more basic vocabulary and grammar skills a retreatant has, the better." +
Group ritual and individual practice may be chanted in Tibetan +
