Group rituals, individual practice +
Sadanha recitation is in Tibetan. I can read and write Tibetan script following 6 week Tibetan course with Tingdzin / Alex MacLachlan. Drupon Rinpoche Khenpo Lhabu will be providing daily teachings in Tibetan via internet with translation into English by an excellent translator. Phonetics and translation into English will be available for all Sadanha recitations. We have also been receiving Tibetan lessons from Drupon Rinpoche every 5 days and expect this will continue in the three year retreat. Whilst I have chosen the level of comprehension of written and spoken Tibetan above as "none", I do understand some words. +
Mahakala puja & individual practice +
All practices are recited in Tibetan. I can read very well the Tibetan script and do not require any phonetics. The instructions are given by Khenpo Lhabu who has a fully qualified translator. All commentaries are translated into English as well as all Sadhanas. +
In general, I do all my daily practices in Tibetan, but do recite in English from time to time, especially if I am working on a translation. +
Instruction will come primarily from native English speaking lamas. The mix of Tibetan and English in group and individual practices is unknown to me. The requirement for Tibetan proficiency in this retreat is to be able to "read a rudimentary level of Tibetan, and be familiar with at least 100 pre-identified Tibetan terms found in most peaceful sadhanas, and will have some proficiency with a dictionary". I meet or will meet this requirement before the start of retreat. +
It is recommended that retreatants read a rudimentary level of Tibetan, and be familiar with at least 100 pre-identified Tibetan terms found in most peaceful sadhanas, and will have some proficiency with a dictionary. Instructions will not be given in Tibetan except with rare visits in which case an English translator will be used. The group ritual texts will have both Tibetan and English mnemonics. Individual practice texts will also incorporate both Tibetan language and English mnemonics. +
Group practices will be in Tibetan, though texts will be translated and will have phonetics. Instruction will be in English, and retreatants will do individual practices in English, and sometimes in Tibetan. +
Group practices will be in Tibetan and there is encouragement to recite in Tibetan, on occasion, in one's room. All instruction is in English. +
Group rituals and individual practice will be recited mostly in Tibetan, with instruction in English. +

Group and individual chanting is in Tibetan with an English translation provided. Before retreat, I am planning to learn as much Tibetan as possible because it would deepen my comprehension of the teachings to understand the language better. +
During my first retreat in Samye Ling we had a strict rota system and we all had to be umze for all the practices that we would do only with pure Tibetan texts (no phonetics and no translation under the Tibetan text). Due to that i can read pretty well.
Drubpon Rigdzin Wangyal told me that being able to read Tibetan properly is the requirement to do the retreat. He said that ideally for group practice one should not use phonetics (like during my first retreat in Samye-Ling). +
Group chanting, individual room practice, and teachings by our retreat master. However, all teachings will also be translated into English by our retreat translator. +
Khentrul Rinpoche teaches in Tibetan with translation by Paloma Lopez Landry. Our daily practices and prayers are all recited in Tibetan. +
As this will be a solitary retreat, all practices will be done on my own using provided or standard Katog Choling texts which include Tibetan, phonetics, and English. Practices and recitations are generally done in Tibetan with the phonetics. Khentrul Rinpoche’s most often teaches with his translator Paloma Landry, though he occasionally teaches and answers questions in English. +
Much of the retreat will be solitary practice. Extensive group instruction will be provided in Tibetan by the Retreat Master, Drupon Rinchen Dorje Rinpoche at the beginning of each section. Additional instruction will be offered (rarely) by His Eminence Garchen Rinpoche. If there will be retreatants who don't understand Tibetan, the teachings and instructions will be translated into English. I may asked to serve as translator. +
