In the fall of 2011, the same time I began my freshman year of college, my older brother entered the previous three year retreat at KTC. He was my first mentor and introduced me to Lama Norlha Rinpoche and the sangha at KTC. During my college years I was unable to go to KTC very often, and therefore much of my study was self-directed. I maintained influential and inspiring communications with several people in the three-year retreat. I occasionally could attend a teaching by Lama Norlha Rinpoche or reach out to lamas at KTC for direction in my contemplative practice, which during that time consisted of shinay, lhatong and tonglin meditations. My study deepened as of the summer of 2015, as I had more opportunity to read, study, spend time at KTC and begin the preliminary practices.  +
In 2007 I started to study Buddhism in an academic setting at Florida International University with Dr. Nathan Katz. In 2010 I moved to Nepal to study Sanskrit at Rangjung Yeshe Institute. I started to informally study Buddhism in high school, and continued while in University by reading books by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, in addition to other Buddhist teachers. In my early twenties I participated in my first Buddhist meditation retreat at a Chinese Mahayana Temple in upstate New York. Shortly after, I was introduced to the Venerable Lama Norlha Rinpoche at Kagyu Thubten Choling, and took refuge under him while still in my early twenties. It was under the guidance of Lama Norlha Rinpoche that my formal study and training of Tibetan Buddhism began. I started to attend his teachings, empowerments, and short meditation retreats. After completing my Masters in Social Work at age 27, I moved up to Kagyu Thubten Choling, and enrolled in their Ãpre-retreat programà meant to prepare potential 3-year retreat candidates. During that time, which also included a pilgrimage to India with Lama Norlha and other KTC Sangha members to visit Buddhist holy sites, we began to further our studies of Tibetan Buddhism including reading comprehension of Tibetan, learning to play traditional Tibetan musical instruments, Torma making, as well as receiving formal teachings and instructions on meditation, and on the practice of Ngondro. After that, I entered into the 8th cycle of the 3-year retreat at KTC in November of 2011 under Lama Norlha Rinpoche, and graduated in May of 2015.  +
In 2006 I enrolled in a Photography course where the professor talked about the importance of meditation in our daily life. He also recommended us to read the Four Noble Truths of Buddhism. This is the starting point of my Dharma path. I began to study Buddhism through book reading. Since near home there is no Dharma Center, a year later, I started to participate in online teachings with Venerable Lhundup Damcho. Through her I met the Spiritual Director of Ganden Shedrub Ling Dharma Center, Yangsi Rinpoche with whom I took the refuge vows and teachings. In 2009, I seriously started to practice shamata. As my interest in Buddhist philosophy on compassion and wisdom grew, I received instructions from Yagnsi Rinpoche to practice meditation on emptiness. I also began to look for retreat experiences. Besides the teachings of Rinpoche, I enrolled in online retreats and courses about analytical meditation, Buddhist psychology, bodhisattva practices, karma and related topics. In 2013, I met Venerable Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche during a Chenrezig retreat at Karma Triyana Dharmachakra (KTD) Monastery in New York. A year later he became my main teacher and His Holiness the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa my root guru.  +
