I grew up in Eastern Russia in the Buddhist Republic of Buryatia and have always considered myself a Buddhist. In 1993-2000 I worked and studied with a Tibetan doctor in St Petersburg named Tsering Wangyal Bista.

It depends. I feel that my father's interest in Eastern philosophy, and my mother's practice of Eastern medicine and Yoga have definitely had a formative effect on me. Furthermore, indirectly, I started studying Buddhism with my mentor Dr. Cohn when I was 16, in year 2005 in high school, shortly after moving to US. He helped lay the foundation for the path, without my being aware of it. Upon his recommendations, I studied and read mindfulness related subjects and authors, including Alexander technique, Daniel Goleman, and Robert Wright. The seeds planted in my midstream are still continuing to ripen today and in the foreseeable future. I engaged in more formal study, first by visiting a local zendo, and after a move a few years later, by becoming a member at the local Phoenix Shambhala center and taking the gradual course curriculum. +
I was born and raised in a Buddhist family in a Tibetan community who followed Nyingma +

I started with 3 Vipassana retreats in Switzerland in 1985-86, with local teacher Walter Klingler and with Mother Sayama, who came all the way from Burma. In 1987 I set out to Asia in search of my meditation teacher and by that time it was clear to me that I seek him or her in the Tibetan tradition. I traveled around for one year and encountered many teachers and finally met my root Lama, Gegen Khyentse Gyatso, at the Monastery of Apo Rinpoche in Manali, Himachal Pradesh, India and stayed with him for 7 years. The last two of these seven years was part of a intended 3 years retreat out of which I was however forced due to visa problems. I later spent 3 months at Zen Mountain Center, California, training with Tenshin Sensei in the Zen tradition; in 1998 I went to Japan where trained for one year with Harada Tangen Roshi at Bukkokuji monastery in Obama, Fukui ken. Since my return to Switzerland I predominantly trained under Drikung Kargyud Lamas, predominantly with Garchen Rinpoche. +
