During 2005-2017, I received the Longchen Nyingtig Ngondro teachings and empowerments from Tulku Nyima Gyaltshen Rinpoche in China and Tibet. It depends. I feel that my father's interest in Eastern philosophy, and my mother's practice of Eastern medicine and Yoga have definitely had a formative effect on me. Furthermore, indirectly, I started studying Buddhism with my mentor Dr. Cohn when I was 16, in year 2005 in high school, shortly after moving to US. He helped lay the foundation for the path, without my being aware of it. Upon his recommendations, I studied and read mindfulness related subjects and authors, including Alexander technique, Daniel Goleman, and Robert Wright. The seeds planted in my midstream are still continuing to ripen today and in the foreseeable future. I engaged in more formal study, first by visiting a local zendo, and after a move a few years later, by becoming a member at the local Phoenix Shambhala center and taking the gradual course curriculum.  +
I began studying Buddhism in 1985 at Karme Choling in Barnet, VT during a week-long Vajrayana retreat associated with Johnson State College in Johnson, VT. This required a basic study of Mahayana practice as an introduction to Shamatha/Vipassana meditation. I continued this practice for some years and later studied Vajrayana Practices with Prof. Reginald Ray for 3 semesters at the University of Colorado, Boulder. In 1995, I entered the Contemplative Psychotherapy program at Naropa Institute, Boulder CO. In 1996 received teachings from Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche, and soon after from Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche (1996). In 1997 attended a 100-day closed "Maitri Retreat" within the context of the Contemplative Psychology Program Naropa Inst. During the next several years, I received empowerments in: Yeshe Tsogyal, Trekcho, and in the practice of Gesar from Namkha Drimed Rinpoche. Commitments in these practices were fulfilled. I first began studying Buddhism in 1992 as a college student after choosing Religious Studies as my major, being drawn particularly to Buddhism and Hinduism. My teachers often had Tibetan monks and lamas visit our classes, as well as other Buddhist scholars and authors. Later in 2000, I visited India for the wedding of close friend and founder of a large non-profit in Dharamsala, India. The wedding was preformed Lobsang Gyatso Rinpoche (now Chamtrul Rinpoche) who I had an instant close connection with. I visited him daily for teachings for the remainder of that six-week trip. During that time, I took refuge with him and afterwards visited yearly for continued teachings and practice, for the following 5 years, staying for 3-6 months at a visit. During those visits I did ngondro, visited Bodh Gaya, and assisted Chamtrul Rinpoche with organizing teachings, as well teaching English to his attendant. At Chamtrul Rinpoche’s home that I first met his cousin, Khentrul Rinpoche, my root guru.  +
