By technicality, at the end of 2008, as part of a final presentation regarding my semester studying Sanskrit in Mysore, India, I sang the refuge formulation in Sanskrit in front of my classmates and teachers. I first took refuge and bodhicitta vows in April 2009 as part of my first Vajrayāna empowerment, with Jigme Tromge Rinpoche. By fortune, I took them in October 2015 with Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche. By election, I again took them in August 2018 with Semo Saraswati Rinpoche. There's more to the story of trying to take refuge, but I will spare you the details! +

Refuge vows were bestowed by Tai Situ Rinpoche in 1989 I believe to a large group in San Francisco. I received the card with a dharma name but really did not understand the process. I did know that Buddhism was where I belonged, and taking the vow was in full good faith with no doubt.
I met Lama Dawa Chhodak Rinpoche in 2003. I asked for a divination to help with a serious family problem. A puja was recommended and I was directed how to make arrangements. Results were dramatic. The following year when Lama Dawa was again in Sacramento, I returned to ask for a divination for help with a deeply troubled student I was working with. The mirror told me to begin a Red Saraswati practice. Lama Dawa gave me a private, abbreviated empowerment, and my heart broke open. Lama Dawa took my hands as I sobbed and assured me, "I am your friend in the Dharma." The following year, I had the good fortune to host Lama Dawa in my home. I asked him to accept me as my student and took refuge with him. +
I took refuge with Lama Geshe Konshok early December 1988 at Kopan monastery near Boudha, Kathmandu, Nepal. I had been encouraged to take refuge by the great Kalu Rinpoche, who I encountered twice before he passed away in 1989, and while training at Kopan monastery I took the opportunity to take refuge with Geshe Lama Konshok. His yogic prowess impressed me deeply. Only many years later did I realise that he was as much trained in the Drukpa Kargyud tradition as he was in the Gelug tradition which he officially represented - an he spent most of his time in caves meditating far away from habitations. +
As a child, I received refuge vows from the 7th Karma Chagme Rinpoche, who also gave me my everyday name: Pema Yangchen.
